Based on my book (Money-Driven Medicine: The Real Reason Health Care
Costs So Much) , produced by Academy-Award winning documentary
film-maker  Alex Gibney (best known for “Enron: The Smartest Guys In
the Room”), a free streaming video of the 90-minute documentary is available throughout the month of November.

  1. I went ahead and paid for a copy. I thought it was well done.
    Unfortunately, the administration of the CC where I teach didn’t agree. Too controversial I guess.

    I’m sorry your Community College found the film too controversial.
    Perhaps you could give your copy to your local library (or lend it to them so that they can see if they would like to buy it.)
    Or, if you know doctors in the area who have contacts at nearby med school or nursing school?
    In any case, I greatly appreciate your support.
    A second thought: if you find an insitution or college that would use the film, I’ll send them one of my DVDs at no charge– it will be the “Panacea Memorial DVD.”
    (I’m serious.)

  3. I’ve shown segments of the film as part of guest lectures on health policy and gotten a very positive responses by faculty and students. This was at a health professions college and at a large public university in Massachusetts. Many students signed up to get involved in reform efforts after viewing the film (I teach and also volunteer with an advocacy group, the Alliance to Defend Health Care).
    Another way to get the film out into the public realm is with grad. student projects. Here’s one example: 5 grad. students in social work who are required to do a project on a public policy issue have chosen health reform and contacted me for guidance.
    The students are working as a team to plan 5 film and discussion forums on the need for health system reform and will use the MDM film. These will start in Jan 2010. I’m assisting them with the project planning and in outreach to other health and human service grad. students in the Boston-area.

    In the near-future there’s a MDM screening in Boston open to the public on Wed. 11/18/09 6pm; here are details:
    Please join us the screening of Money Driven Medicine: What’s Wrong with America’s Healthcare and How to Fix It” on Wednesday, November 18th and 6:00 PM at Northeastern University, Shillman Hall, 115 Forsyth Street.
    The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring healthcare leaders and policymakers in Massachusetts.
    The documentary, by California Newsreel, is to educate individuals about health care reform.
    It helps to illustrate personal and professional opinions of what’s wrong with the American health care system and hopefully motivates us to get involved in the debate and become active for getting the kind of health care system that responds to the needs of all Americans.

  8. A friend of mine who is interested in nursing homes sent me a link to Money-Driven Medicine. I have not seen the movie but the trailer looks interesting. It also provides the essential introduction Americans need to become knowledgeable participants in healthcare reform. I am wondering to watch this film after knowing good reviews here.
